This week in my sketchbook is a sort of creepy mechanical ink/ drawing machine. This image is based on an instagram challenge by @drawmearobot and @daviddiez_illustrador (Go check them out if you have time!). This was my submission for the challenge.
Recently I had seen a video where somebody offered good practice advice drawing machinery, I wish I could remember it now to give credit, but basically they laid down scribbles in marker and then used a pen to ink over that, following the randomness of the marker with pen to introduce semi mechanical shapes. So this is coincidental, as I was doing some practice work I came across this challenge.
Since this was a more deliberate exercise I started with pencil (as you do), then switched to marker to get in all the shapes and values correct, and finally I inked it with a bic pen and a sharpie. As I spent the rest of the day pretty happy with the result I colored in digitally to finish it off.
