Hey guys! This week in the sketchbook archives I’m looking at some creature design. A fun exercise that I’ve found is to start with the skeleton of something known, in this case a raccoon. Then you can turn it into something unknown!

I drew the skeleton trying to be as accurate as possible, but to be honest this wasn’t the most fun for me. I really prefer creating intricate than trying to copy a technical drawing.

After I had the skeleton done I was off to the next step, creating a new creature. I took it in a reptilian direction at first, then tried to just draw a raccoon, as well as a few other things. Honestly I just liked the raccoon the best, and thought it would be fun to just add a little turtle shell to him.

I was pretty happy with this as a final design and gave it some color!

I encourage these kinds of exercises when you have a bit of an artistic block.

Please share and subscribe if you like this blog! Hope you all have a great week and get some good artistic endeavors going, whatever that may be!
