Hey all! This week in the sketchbook archives I have some toned paper pieces for you. Drawing paper comes in all sorts of colors, this toned paper is kinda tan. I like drawing on toned paper because it gives you a real jump start on values. This helps your drawings look more realistic and 3D, easier than on white paper. You have a good mid tone color with the paper, then your pencil marks become the darks and shadows. You can even take a white pen or colored pencil and give it that extra punch of highlights.
All year long I have really been trying to work on sketching as an art form. I really like the look of fully fleshed out pages before I flip on to the next page. It doesn’t always come real easy but here’s some good ones from the previous few weeks:

Honestly, I need to do a dedicated post of some of the dino sketches I’ve done lately. I really find that fun, and it is a good jumping off point into the realm of fantasy. The top one is probably a fictional dinosaur, but I was looking at a photo of an Ankylisaurus, and the second one is a Saichania.

This forest scene even incorporated a grey marker to make the darks even more dark.

I figured it’s been a while since I’ve done some portraiture, so why not include some LOTR? This is EXACLTY what I mean when I was talking about filling the entire page earlier. I really like how these sketches all are on the Gondor theme. Aragorn of course in the top right, Elendil on the left and the White City of Minas Tirith quickly sketched in on the bottom.
Let me know how things are going with your creative endeavors! Have you tried drawing on toned paper? As always hope you guys have a great week. Like and share this post! And Subscribe if you haven’t!
