Hey all! This week in the sketchbook we have (as promised last week) a simple watercolor painting. I made this as a mothers day card, which was somewhat challenging given how small it is. (4″x6″) Its always fun to do a little watercoloring though! Usually how I approach this is to do the pen work first. This time however, I used watercolor pencils which are fun. I added the ink on afterwards to give it a little cleaner of a look.

Also, i’ve been getting back to the sketchbook. The daily drawing has been suffering a little bit lately, but as always with creative endeavors it ebbs and flows. Just go with it.

I learned a new word this week from a character design book I have. “Orthographic”. Basically in artistry its a way of depicting something three dimensional in two dimensional space. So for this chicken dragon thing I included a 3/4 view, a front view and a top view. I need to get in the having of doing that with other creature designs.

I’ve also included another page from my sketchbook with five other fun creature designs. This is lately where my mind goes when I don’t have anything specific I want to draw but I still want to fill up a sketch page. Each one of these creatures usually starts with a scribble. Just very lightly drawing something that looks like you pulled it out of the drain. Then as you add darker lines, forms begin to reveal themselves. And then the clean up becomes easy and dare I say fun. I don’t usually erase the scribbles but sometimes they disappear after I scan them in. When I find something I like well enough to do a proper illustration of, I usually start all over, with more deliberate linework.

If you’ve got any names for any of these creatures I’d love to hear them! Comment on this post and let me know!

I hope you all are having an excellent week, and continue to do so! Let me know what’s going on with you and also what kind of other artworks you’d like to see in the future! Till next time!

    Fun post!

    Naming your characters:

#3 Tooty, because that’s what it looks like it would say.

    #4 Fanny, just seemed appropriate!!!

    love you, Will.
