Hey all! This week in the studio I’m working on an oil painting. I realized I made over 50 paintings last year and like none this year, so that had to change. Last week we went for a hike up in the mountains in Santa Fe, more specifically the Winsor Trail. A very popular recreation trail for folks trying to get to the alpine lakes in the area. I’ve always loved this one shot where the trail goes straight into the dense tall trees. This will be my subject for this weeks painting.

As always I start with a little sketch, however looking back at the final product I feel I should’ve taken more time with this step. But, I just jumped right into it, I was excited to starting painting again. Here are some progress shots:

I’m pretty happy with my little practice piece. I think it looks like it very much captures the spirit of that part of the trail. I mentioned earlier it would be wise to spend more time on the thumbnail drawing next time. Sometimes it helps to work out the values or the composition. I think that’s my one criticism with this piece, is that the values are too similar, and maybe the colors too. But that’s why we practice!

You may have noticed this post did not come out on the usual Monday, but I decided that its much more prudent to make a post when I have something to write about rather than adhering to a schedule. We’ll see how that goes for a while. ALSO, please share this website with anyone you know that may like it! Have a great week guys!
